How Do You Achieve the Perfect Preparation for Bubble Tea?
Tapioca pearls are the heart of a true bubble tea. These small, chewy balls give the popular drink its characteristic texture and create its unmistakable chewing experience. But how do you prepare them properly? In this article, we explain what tapioca is, why it is so important for bubble tea, and how to prepare it perfectly.

What is Tapioca?
Tapioca is made from the starch of the cassava root. This gluten-free ingredient is popular in many Asian desserts and drinks. Classic tapioca pearls have a neutral taste and readily absorb the flavor of the tea or syrup they are soaked in.
BoBoQ Swiss offers two types of tapioca:
Classic tapioca pearls: These pearls need to be cooked to achieve their perfect chewy texture.
Quick-cook tapioca: These pearls need only a few minutes of cooking time.
Why Is Tapioca Important for Bubble Tea?
Tapioca pearls are more than just an ingredient – they are the hallmark of a true bubble tea. They provide:
A special texture known as “QQ” – a Taiwanese term for the perfect combination of softness and chewiness.
A unique drinking experience, since you can both drink and chew.
Versatility, as they can be used in milk tea, fruit tea, or even desserts.

Cook the pearls: After boiling, the display automatically switches to “Stew Pearls”, and the device beeps when the process is complete.
Drain and cool the tapioca: Remove the tapioca pearls from the cooker and rinse them with cold water until they reach room temperature.
Finish with syrup: Place the tapioca pearls in a container, mix them with 150 ml of brown sugar syrup and 60 ml of water, and stir well.
Quick-Cook Tapioca in 5 Minutes

Boil the water: Bring 6 L of water to a boil in a large pot.
Add the tapioca: Add the tapioca pearls to the boiling water and stir gently until all the pearls rise to the surface.
Cook: Reduce the heat to medium and let the tapioca pearls cook for 5 minutes.
Stir: Stir the pearls every 1–2 minutes to keep them from sticking together.
Let them steep: Turn off the heat. Let the tapioca pearls sit in the hot water for another 5 minutes.
Drain and rinse: Drain the pearls through a sieve and rinse them under cold water to improve their texture.
Finish and serve: Mix the pearls with sugar or brown sugar syrup and serve warm or cold. Perfect as a topping for milk tea, bubble tea, or desserts.
Tips for the Perfect Tapioca Consistency
Always use enough water so the pearls don’t stick together.
Don’t overcook them, or they will become too soft.
After cooking, store them in sugar or syrup right away so they don’t dry out.
Use within 4–6 hours for the best texture.v
